Update: Apparently the situation is still unstable (a piece of the crane is still dangling)– Tim Minton at WNBC is getting pushed out of the area by the FDNY live on Channel 4 right now. Latest update says that the people in the cab weren’t seriously injured (amazing)– but they’re being taken to the hospital for examination. Minton points out that this is the third construction accident this week. Helicopter shots are showing 3rd Ave shut down 12th-14th, but traffic is moving east-west on 14th.

Fake iPod Shuffle (2nd gen) released BEFORE the real one

When the boys at Engadget aren’t fellating themselves in a sea of smugness and narcissism, they call call these sort of posts ‘Keepin it Real Fake’. Well keep suckin’ Engadget, we beat you to it this time. (just playin!) What you’re seeing here is (supossedly) a faked second generation iPod Shuffle. Pretty much every iPod to come out has been knocked off by a Chinese company, but this is the first time we’ve seen a fake before the real one is even released to the public. My girl in Hong Kong relayed this pic to me from an as yet unnamed Chinese gadget forum . I can’t personally vouch for the validity of it and I can’t read Mandarin; but here’s the pic nonetheless.

Wired NEXTfest kicks off in NYC

The Wired NEXTfest finally lands in NYC this weekend. My pals over at Gothamist got a sneak peek of the futurist playground being erected at the Javits Center. I’ll be there tomorrow basking in the glowing hum of technologic artifacts from the future.
Here’s what Gothamist is gushing over at the show:

• Laser Harp - Break the laser beams and make beautiful music

• Media Mirror - Watch 200 channels of live cable tv in real time. When can we get one of these for our home?

• GEs 100ft projection screen running an interactive piece by ny based tronic. (who
  has also over seen the entire events experience and design from year one) connected to this display is a video capture system that takes your video image and projects it onto their screen, turning your image into a monographic wonder.

• Kick Ass Kung Fu - play a game of kung fu where the controler is you. You stand in the middle of a long rectangular mat with projection screens on either side of you.
  Think 2D street fighter.

• Panascope Lan - An interactive panoramic display (think playing at the bottom of your cereal bowl) projects to immerse you in a hemisphere of game play. Challenge opponents in a game of chase among virtual rooftops.

• Brainball - A favorite of ours from last years show makes a return this year. The way to win is to be the most relaxed, so as a New Yorker this is a very tough thing to do. With the crowd gathered and cheering you on, it makes it quite difficult to find your inner zen. The calmest mind wins.

iRiver’s new S10 blows Apple’s next-gen Shuffle away

iRiver has just announced my next MP3 player, the S10. It’s extremely small, just 42 x 30 x 10.8 mm, has a bright organic LED display, and is only 1.9 grams heavier than the new iPod Shuffle that was announced yesterday. It comes in one AND two gigabyte flavors (the new Shuffle maxes out at 1) and most importantly, plays Ogg Vorbis(!!) in addition to the standard MP3, WMA, ASF regimen. (The Shuffle only plays MP3 and evil-greedy-corporation-DRM format).
Finally something to replace the beaten and repeatedly lost MobiBLU 1500i from around my neck.
Sadly no word on pricing or availability, but with the Shuffle debuting in October I’d suspect iRiver to flood the market with these babies around the same time.
